“It seems the rumors of my demise are premature. Thanks to your grandmother, Librarian.” Sned, the snow maiden, rasped her words out, followed by a coughing fit. An ice maiden darted forward and helped her sip water from a glass. Sned collapsed against a pile of pillows, her skin paler than her normal appearance.

“She has her moments.” Xandie glanced at Elspeth, who was currently twerking a victory dance under the horrified gazes of the ice maidens.

“Is she always as lively as this?” Sned whispered.

“Sadly, yes. Yes, she is. She’s a delight and a torment to all of Point Muse.”

Elspeth paused her twerking and sauntered over. “That’s right. I’m a witchy delight for one and all.” She cackled and the lights fizzled above them before settling down. “Now. How are you feeling? My potions pack a punch.”

The patient smiled wanly. “I feel almost as bad as when I first died but I’m very grateful I avoided a second more permanent death. I’ll survive, thanks to you, Elspeth Harrow.”

According to Jack Frost, Sned had become the snow maiden a very long time ago when she had died in the middle of a snowstorm. Winter had decided she would make a perfect snow maiden and had resurrected her. Now all that died in snowy weather became hers. Xandie dove in with her questions. “What happened?” She paced in front of the bed. Xandie needed to stop the killer before anyone else was hurt…or killed.

“I called for my iced tea which my maiden brought to me. Soon after drinking, I felt like my throat was on fire. I remember little after that until waking up here in my room. But my maiden would never willingly hurt me. She found the iced tea set out on the kitchen table.”

“Anyone could have poisoned your tea.”

“Indeed.” Sned inclined her head in agreement.

A loud commotion at the door sounded as Kai Nisse, leader of the elves, forced his way through the door. He strode quickly to the bed and dropped to his knees. Grabbing Sned’s hand, he held it tight. “I do not care what people say. You almost died. If those on the council and our own people cannot stand our being together then I will resign my leadership. You are worth more to me.”

The snow maiden closed her eyes for a moment before lifting a shaking hand to Kai’s face. “Near death has brought clarity to me as well. The time for hiding is done.”

“Aha,” Xandie crowed. “That conversation I heard on the stairs between an ice maiden and an elf was all about you two dating.”

Kai lifted off his knees and perched on the side of the bed, still holding Sned’s hand. “Yes. Both of our entourages and advisors wanted us to stay quiet and hidden until after the meeting, but I refused. I love Sned and didn’t want to hide any longer.”

“I was the one who was unsure,” Sned confessed. “I was worried about the fallout. But my brush with permanent death has changed that.
